A major, 10-month long road construction project near the Cherry Creek Shopping Center that included a multi-day closure in September was completed Saturday, according to Denver Public Works.

The new storm sewer implementation initiative, called the University/Josephine Improvement Project, was finished three weeks ahead of schedule, officials said Monday. The construction at the busy intersection was aimed at mitigating recurrent flooding issues.

New pavement was also laid as part of the construction and is expected to last 30 years.

In all, some 8,000 feet of curb and gutter, 29 new manholes and seven traffic signals were installed. Over 1,110 truckloads of concrete were also poured.

Officials say they are pleased the project was completed before the holiday shopping rush, restoring unhindered access to shops in the area.

A landscaping project for the median along University Boulevard south of 1st Avenue is planned for the spring to expand upon the new storm sewer system.
