Authorities in Arapahoe County say a fleeing robbery suspect drove into a sheriff’s deputy before he was shot by authorities in an encounter early Tuesday that unfolded in a strip mall parking lot.
The county sheriff’s office said deputies were called to the Arapahoe Village Shopping Center at about 12:30 a.m. on a report that a liquor store had been robbed.
“Upon arrival, deputies attempted to contact a suspect vehicle in the parking lot,” according to a sheriff’s office news release. “The suspect vehicle continued through the parking lot, making several turns and then struck one of the responding deputies who was on foot.”
A second deputy shot the suspect, wounding him, officials say.
“There were no other occupants in the suspect vehicle,” the release said. “First aid was immediately provided by the involved deputies.”
The suspect was taken to a nearby hospital, but officials did not provide further details on his condition. The injured deputy was also taken to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
The sheriff’s office declined to release further information on the male suspect.
Photos from the scene showed a white sedan with front-end damage and a shattered windshield.
Investigators cordoned off the scene with yellow tape as they investigated the encounter.
