A car stolen from a hospitalized Denver Police Department officer has been recovered.

Another Denver officer spotted the missing 2012 Hyundai Sonata on Sunday afternoon while on patrol, said Christine Downs, a police department spokeswoman.

The family of Officer John Adsit reported the car missing on Saturday from a Denver Health parking lot in the 700 block of Speer Boulevard. Adsit, a bicycle officer, has been hospitalized since Dec. 3 after he was run over by a car while escorting a high school student protest on East Colfax Avenue.

The car was found in the 700 block of Fox Street, less than a half mile from where it was stolen, Downs said. The car did not appear to have exterior damage. Detectives are looking for fingerprints and other evidence that might lead them to the thief.

Three other officers also were hit in the accident after the car’s driver experienced what police have described as a medical episode. They were treated for their injuries and released.

But Adsit suffered devastating injuries that have required multiple surgeries. On Dec. 20, his family released a statement saying he had opened his eyes for the first time and was able to mouth “I love you” to them.

Adsit suffered multiple broken bones and damage to vital organs, the statement said.

“His fight to live has been unbelievable, and we want you to know that your prayers have made a difference!,” the family statement said.

Adsit is married and has four children.
