A motorcyclist died in a hit-and-run crash early Monday morning, and officers later found the drivers who fled the scene, police said.
The fatal crash happened about 2:15 a.m. near the intersection of East Mississippi Avenue and South Moline Street, according to an Aurora Police Department news release. The investigation is ongoing.
Police said the motorcyclist, an adult male, was heading east on Mississippi in the left lane, and two pickup trucks, which were traveling together, were westbound on Mississippi.
The driver of a blue pickup truck turned left to go south on Moline in front of the motorcycle, and the rider laid the bike down in the intersection “trying to avoid a crash,” police said.
The second pickup truck, a black and orange truck driven by an adult male, then hit the motorcyclist.
Both trucks stopped and the drivers checked on the downed motorcycle rider before getting back in their trucks and fleeing, police said.
The motorcyclist, who was not wearing a helmet, was taken to a hospital, where he died of his injuries.
A witness photographed the trucks before they left the scene, police said. Aurora police later found the trucks and the drivers in south Aurora, along with evidence tying the trucks to the fatal crash.
Police are investigating whether alcohol was involved in the incident.
The names of the three involved in the incident were not immediately released.
It was not clear whether anyone had been arrested.
