Officers shot and killed a man who led them on a high-speed chase Tuesday on Interstate 70 near Glenwood Springs.

According to the Garfield County Sheriff’s Office, the unidentified man’s vehicle, which reached speeds of up to 95 mph, was stopped using spike strips near the Canyon Creek exit, west of Glenwood Springs.

After the suspect exited the vehicle, he held a gun to his own head, Garfield County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Walt Stowe said. Ignoring orders to stop, the man started running down the highway.

Stowe said shots were fired, striking the suspect. The man was pronounced dead at Valley View Hospital.

No deputies or police officers were injured in the pursuit or the events that followed.

The Colorado Bureau of Investigation was called in and arrived at the scene shortly after 6 p.m..

The incident began at about 4:15 p.m., Stowe said, when deputies responded to a felony domestic violence call in the Parachute area.

Numerous law enforcement agencies, including the Garfield County Sheriff’s Office and the Colorado State Patrol, were on the scene.

The Colorado Department of Transportation said I-70 between New Castle and Canyon Creek was closed in both directions at about 4:53 p.m.
