Dr. Richard Krugman announced Monday he will soon leave his longtime position as dean of the University of Colorado School of Medicine, where he has served more than two decades
.

Krugman, a pediatrician who came to prominence as head of the Kempe National Center for the Prevention and Treatment of Child Abuse and Neglect, will stay on at CU’s Anschutz campus in Aurora until a successor is found.

Krugman began as acting dean before taking the permanent position in March 1992.

During Krugman’s tenure, the medical school moved from east Denver to the Anschutz campus alongside University of Colorado Hospital.

The school worked closely with the hospital to attract new faculty members and research talent as the hospital system grew along the Front Range and into other states.

Krugman has also backed stronger ethical policies, including a clampdown on CU-related physicians accepting pharmaceutical company payments that have drawn widespread criticism.

Krugman, 71,
will go back to the Kempe Center after the next dean is named.
