Investigators determined that a Friday fire that killed an 83-year-old woman in a Golden senior living community was started by a cigarette igniting her bedding.

The woman was found dead when fire crews arrived at at the Ulysses Senior Community, according to City of Golden spokeswoman Karlyn Tilley.

Investigators say the fire began on the victim’s bed after a cigarette lit it ablaze, the release said.

“The victim made her way to the bathroom, but was found dead on the bathroom floor,” the release said.

An autopsy will be performed later in the week, although the release said it appears the cause of death was smoke inhalation.

The victim was the sole resident of the home. Her name has not been released.
