A small experimental plane with two people aboard crashed in Weld County on Wednesday afternoon, authorities confirmed.

Both aboard were killed.

The Wheeler Express aircraft crashed under unknown circumstances, according to Allen Kenitzer, a spokesman for the Federal Aviation Administration.

Kenitzer said information on where the plane departed and was headed was not immediately available.

Images from the scene taken by a television news helicopter showed debris scattered in a field and emergency responders surrounding the wreckage.

The county sheriff’s office announced the crash about 2:45 p.m. The plane crashed near the intersection of county roads 50 and 53, just south of Kersey and southeast of Greeley.

“There’s a bunch of emergency vehicles just south of us,” said Alison Connell, who lives near where the plane went down.

“I heard the plane earlier, and then I heard what sounded like a car door opening and shutting,” she said.
