Cannabist Show: He’s a pro-pot former NFL player

The Cannabist Show is a weekly series hosted by Denver Post marijuana editor Ricardo Baca. Each week, the show will focus on the top headlines — both important and strange — in the world of marijuana, chats with guests and a Pot Quiz.

This week in cannabis, the state of Colorado had its biggest month yet in recreational marijuana sales. The state sold more than $36.4 million in recreational pot in January, beating its previous monthly record from December by more than a million dollars. The taxes were substantial too, with more than $7.2 million coming from recreational taxes alone, another record for the state. Baca also talks about a bold claim comedian Doug Benson made this week about the TSA’s relationship with marijuana. (“The TSA, for the most part, does not care about marijuana,” Benson said on his talk show “Getting Doug with High.”) And in viral news, there’s an unbelievable, six-tentacled squid blunt on Instagram that has to be seen to be believed.

The show’s first guest is Taylor West, the deputy director of the National Cannabis Industry Association. West gives us a national perspective from the marijuana industry on some important federal bills being proposed — including the bipartisan Senate bill that aims to change medical marijuana laws and the Regulate Marijuana Like Alcohol Act.

This week’s other guest is former NFL player, writer and marijuana advocate Nate Jackson, who was a tight end with the Denver Broncos for six seasons and authored “Slow Getting Up: A Story of NFL Survival from the Bottom of the Pile.” Jackson takes Baca and his viewers into NFL locker rooms — where the coaches and staffs are well aware that many of the athletes are medicating with cannabis, regardless of the league’s strict rules regarding the substance.

In this week’s Pot Quiz, there’s a new class being offered in Denver that teaches students how to properly pair hash with … what exactly? Play along!
