Pitkin County officials say a Colorado Springs man and his 13-year-old son found dead in a tent at the Maroon Bells earlier this month died from carbon monoxide poisoning.

The county coroner’s office said Jeffery Beard, 41, and Cameron Beard died July 16 from using a camp stove in an enclosed space.

Their deaths have been ruled accidental.

The two were found by hikers at their Maroon Bells campsite south of West Maroon Pass at an elevation of about 11,000 feet.

Two other children — an older daughter, 15 years old, and a younger son, 7 years old — were sleeping in a nearby tent. They were later spotted in a parking lot near the campsite.

Officials initially said they believed the father and son had been killed by a lightning strike.
