A snowstorm moving south through the state hit the metro area as motorists headed out for their morning commute on Wednesday.

The system is being blamed for accidents which snarled traffic along the central and northern Front Range.

The National Weather Service said the Denver area can expect between 1 and 3 inches of snow before the system moves out on Wednesday night.

Temperatures in the city are expected to top out at 34 degrees.

The northern mountains are forecasted to get as much as 16 inches of snow with the storm, according to meteorologist Kyle Fredin. While the state’s central mountains are expected to see less accumulation, Fredin said the snowfall there will still be significant.

Much of the north-central high country is under a winter storm warning into Wednesday night.

Denver International Airport said their snow removal crews are “hard at work.” Officials are encouraging passengers to keep an eye on their flight status.

Morning flight delays of roughly an hour dissipated starting at about noon.

“Were looking for improving weather (Wednesday night) and into Thursday morning,” Fredin said of the Denver area.

Denver’s temperatures on Thursday are expected to top out in the upper 50s, Fredin said. Forecasters are calling for highs in the low 70s on Friday.
