A man who had fired shots at Denver police officers downtown was shot in the arm and taken to a local hospital, according to the department.

Chisom Nwandilibe, 28, was to be held on suspicion of multiple felony charges when he is released from the hospital, said Sonny Jackson, a police department spokesman.

Officers were called about midnight Monday on a report of a man with a weapon near 15th and California streets, police said.

Arriving officers encountered the suspect at 17th and California streets. The suspect fired shots and attempted to flee on foot, Jackson said. Police returned fire.

The incident ended a short time and distance later, near Cleveland Place and Broadway.

Nwandilibe was held on suspicion of first-degree assault of a peace officer, possession of a weapon by a previous offender and felony menacing.

No officers were injured. The incident shut down several downtown streets overnight, including a section of California, and light-rail morning commuter traffic was delayed.

Police began to lift some street closures around 6:30 a.m. All roads were reopened by 8:30 a.m. Light-rail service was restored around 6:45 a.m.

Nwandilibe was arrested in Denver in 2012 and convicted of criminal possession of identification documents with multiple victims, according to Colorado Bureau of Investigation records. A resisting-arrest charge was dropped in the 2012 case. Nwandilibe received a two-year deferred sentence in that case.
