Colorado’s popular Mount Evans Road, which winds its way to the stop of the namesake iconic 14,240-foot mountain, reopened Tuesday after an extended closure for construction.

The Colorado Department of Transportation says the roadway stabilization project taking place above Lincoln Lake has been completed.

“Typically CDOT closes the roadway from Summit Lake to the top of Mount Evans the Tuesday after Labor Day weekend,” CDOT said Tuesday in a news release. “This year, CDOT will extend the opening to the top until the first significant snowfall, allowing visitors extra time to enjoy one of Colorado’s most scenic tourist destinations.”

Some construction will continue on the road during weekdays over an 8-mile stretch of the high country highway, reducing travel to one lane with flaggers alternating motorists.

On weekends, however, the road will be completely open.

On top of the construction, the 14.7-mile road was buried under several feet of snow after late May storms which pushed back the annual Memorial Day opening.

Information regarding the opening and closing of seasonal highways in Colorado is available at cotrip.org or by calling 511.
