An Arvada man who spray-painted “my wife is a cheater” on his home in March before setting it ablaze was sentenced Monday to five years of probation.

William Eugene Lindauer, 31, was also ordered to serve four years and six months of work release, Jefferson County prosecutors say.

In July, Lindauer pleaded guilty to arson, stalking and reckless endangerment in the case.

Lindauer told police he was in a drunken stupor when he scrawled the phrase and the name of his wife’s purported lover on the home in the early morning hours of March 10.

Witnesses told police Lindauer fled on a bicycle after his home was ablaze, speeding past a neighbor who tried to stop him as those on the block awoke to an explosion and flames, according to an arrest affidavit.

Lindauer was initially charged with 13 counts in the incident.

Hours before the blaze, Lindauer bought a handgun and two types of ammunition, he told investigators. He also said he bought vodka and began doing shots before allegedly igniting his home.

Lindauer was found by police after he called 911 in Denver “in an attempt to receive medical attention for an injured hand,” the affidavit says.

Lindauer told investigators he had no recollection of the fire, court records say.
