A 9-year-old boy shot in the head by his little brother last week in southern Colorado has died, police announced Monday.

The Trinidad Police Department says the child was taken off life support on Sunday.

Investigators say the shooting happened Jan. 4 after the two children found a handgun in a parked vehicle they were in.

The 9-year-old was struck after the firearm discharged while in the hands of his 8-year-old brother, investigators say.

The boys were in the care of a family friend while their parents attended a medical appointment when the shooting happened.

The boy was rushed to Mt. San Rafael Hospital in Trinidad and then flown via Flight for Life to Children’s Hospital Colorado in Aurora. He was listed in critical condition before his death.

Police say no arrests have been made in the case and that prosecutors will determine if any charges will be handed down once detectives finish investigating the shooting.

Police did not release the boys’ names.
