Flags will be lowered to half-staff Monday to honor the life of Mesa County Deputy Sheriff Derek Geer, who was fatally shot by a teen suspect.

Gov. John Hickenlooper ordered the lowering of the flags on Monday from sunrise to sunset, according to a governor’s office news release.

Geer was removed from life support late Wednesday following the Monday shooting in Grand Junction by 17-year-old Austin Patrick Holzer.

Geer, a U.S. Navy veteran, worked in several areas of the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office during his 15 years of service. Geer was awarded a lifesaving medal in 2012 when he revived a heart attack victim.

Geer’s organs were removed for donation.

Geer is survived by his wife and two children, ages 13 and 11.

The public is welcome to attend Geer’s funeral, which is scheduled for 1 p.m. Monday at the Canyon View Vineyard Church at 736 24½ Road .

Citizens wanting to pay their respects can line the processional route which will be south on 24 ½ Road to G Road, west on G Road to 24 Road, south on 24 Road, to the River Road turnoff, east on River Road to Riverside Parkway, east on Riverside Parkway to the Highway 50 south turnoff and then south on Highway 50 to 26 ¼ Road.

A live stream of the funeral will be set up at alternative viewing locations including the First Presbyterian at 3940 27 ½ Road, Victory Life at 2066 Highway 5 and 50, Clifton Christian at 615 Interstate 70 business loop, Fellowship Church at 765 24 Road, American Lutheran Church 631 26 ½ Road and Colorado Mesa University at the Robinson Theatre at 1100 North Avenue.

There will also be a live stream link for people to watch online.

The parking lot at Canyon View Vineyard Church is reserved for family and local law enforcement, and all other vehicles will need to park in and around Canyon View Park or at Caprock Academy. There will be a shuttle provided to take people from the park to the church.
