The suspect in a Broomfield bank robbery was shot by a police officer Friday afternoon, officials said.

Broomfield police officers responded to a robbery in progress at TCF Bank at 144th Avenue and Lowell Boulevard at 3:28 p.m., said Sgt. D.P. Walts with Broomfield police.

Police got a report that the suspect was in a full-sized, white pickup truck leaving the area, Walts said. A similar vehicle was spotted by an officer at West 144th Avenue just west of Aspen Street, and the vehicle stopped.

It was unclear whether the officer stopped the vehicle, or the driver simply stopped on his own, Walts said.

At 3:33 p.m., “gunfire was exchanged” between the officer and the suspect.

Walts did not know who shot first.

The officer and the suspect have not been identified.

The suspect, who was described as a white male in his mid-40s, was transported to a local hospital with unknown injuries, Walts said.

The officer was not injured, he said.

Officers from the Rocky Mountain Safe Streets Task Force, in collaboration with Broomfield police will investigate the robbery.

The 17th Judicial District’s Critical Incident Investigation Team will investigate the shooting. The officer has been placed on administrative leave. Both are standard practices following officer-involved shootings.
