A man arrested on suspicion of robbing a Denver bank Tuesday morning was wearing a name tag identifying himself when he approached tellers and demanded cash, according to court papers.
John Martinez, 68, walked into the bank’s branch at Pecos Street and West 38th Avenue wearing a T-shirt with the name “John” on his chest area, according to a probable-cause statement.
Witnesses recorded the robber’s license plate, which was registered to Martinez. Between the name tag and the fleeing vehicle, police were able to identify him as the thief, the papers say.
Several bank tellers also identified Martinez from a photo lineup, according to the papers.
Officers found Martinez at a Ramada Inn in Denver hours after the robbery and arrested him before he allegedly admitted to the robbery.
“Martinez advised that he told his wife that he had borrowed the money and did not tell her that he had robbed the bank,” the probable-cause statement said.
During a police interview, Martinez also said he sneaked out of the room he shared with his wife at the motel — while she slept — to rob the bank, adding that the two had been recently evicted from their home.
Martinez is being held without bond on charges of aggravated robbery. The FBI was leading the investigation into the robbery.
