Weekend reports that Twitter Inc. might be introducing a major change as early as this week had its users upset, to say the least.

According to the reports, the social media site was considering switching from its chronological system to a new algorithm based on what tweets the site thinks users want to see.

As the reports spread, #RIPTwitter became the No. 1 trending hashtag on the website.

Saturday afternoon, Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey sent out a series of tweets intended to douse the firestorm.

“Hello Twitter!” he posted as @jack “Regarding #RIPTwitter: I want you all to know we’re always listening. We never planned to reorder timelines next week.”

“We love the livestream,” he added. “Thank you for your passion and trust.”

One of the big draws for Twitter, especially in the news industry, is that things are chronological and that makes it rather easy to find out when things are happening.

The earlier reports had said that the change might be something users could opt in or out of.
