A Walsenburg woman has been charged in the death of her 4-year-old stepdaughter, according to police.

Marissa Jackson, 26, was charged with one count of child abuse resulting in death and was booked into the Huerfano County Jail, according to police. An investigation into the child’s death is ongoing and police say they could file more charges at a later date.

Officials identified the girl Tuesday as Alani Tatiana Reyes-Cueva.

Police immediately called the toddler’s death “suspicious” and asked for state investigators’ help to help unravel how the child died.

Officers were called to a home on the 200 block of East 8th Street about 10 p.m. Sunday after receiving reports that a child was in distress. Police found the girl seizing and unresponsive, according to Chief Tommie McLallen.

The girl was taken to the Spanish Peaks Regional Health Center where she was pronounced dead.

A representative of the Huerfano County District Attorney said a judge presiding over the case has issued a gag order barring any further information about the toddler’s death from being released.
