A 31-year-old Aurora man died after driving his car into the Johnson Reservoir near Clement Park in Jefferson County early Monday morning.

Someone reported seeing the car in the water, resting on its roof, with the tail end above the surface at about 4:27 a.m., said Colorado State Patrol spokesman Trooper Nate Reid.

Witnesses said they saw the man “drive around the lake one complete time at least, maybe more,” Reid said.

The two-door 2007 Pontiac failed to negotiate a sharp left turn and went into the water, Reid said. “He didn’t have to be going very fast to miss this curve. It’s a big lake, he was just on the edge so it’s not very deep where he was.”

A jogger reported the accident, said Jefferson County Sheriff’s spokesman Mark Techmeyer.
