Through Oct. 5. One thing you notice about the current crop of creatives coming out of art schools is that their work is all over the map. They’re not painters or photographers or sculptors. They’re all of those things at once, plus photographers, conceptualists and more. So it’s surprising, and not, to see Joseph Coniff, a newish arrival on the scene, displaying nearly minimalist paintings at Rule Gallery. More recently, we’ve seen his quirky, 3-D pieces made from found objects, like the 6-foot-tall desk chair he showed at Republic Plaza this summer. The new paintings strip it down, forgoing recycled cultural relics and forcing viewers to come at the work without the context of familiar images. It’s a mature effort that hints at even better things to come. Through Oct. 5, Rule Gallery, 3254 Walnut St., Free. 303-800-6776 or rulegallery.com.
