Labor Day normally means the unofficial end of summer, and with it, cooling temperatures. However, it’s possible an exception — at least on the weather front — will occur Wednesday.

The National Weather Service forecast calls for a high temperature of 94 degrees. The record high for the date is 95 degrees; the last time the Denver area topped 90 degrees was Aug. 19.

“The chances of reaching 90 degrees at this time of year are low; normally we’re looking at the mid- to high 70s and then cooling down into the low 70s by the end of the month,” a spokeswoman for the NWS said.

The source for Wednesday’s exceptional hot day is a high pressure system that’s lingered over the area. By Thursday, the high temperature is predicted to drop by more than 20 degrees.
