COLORADO SPRINGS — El Paso Sheriff Terry Maketa offered an endorsement to a candidate for sheriff in exchange for personal favors and mishandled internal affairs investigations, according to a report on an investigation into employee complaints.

Ray Deeny of the law firm Sherman and Howard also said the investigation found that Maketa had inappropriate relationships with three females in the department.

Deeny gave his briefing on the independent investigation after meeting behind closed doors Thursday morning with the El Paso County Board of Commissioners.

He said a summary of findings was turned over to the Colorado Bureau of Investigation on Thursday at noon as part of its ongoing criminal investigation into the sheriff’s office.
