A two-vehicle accident on northbound Interstate 25 south of downtown Denver left five people injured on Friday morning, closing the highway for hours before it reopened about 9 a.m.

A police dispatcher called the wreck a “big one.”

Police said a sports utility vehicle lost control and was struck by a semi-trailer. One person was seriously injured in the crash. Police initially said two people were seriously hurt.

The crash happened about 6:15 a.m. near the University Boulevard off ramp, fire officials said. The northbound lanes of the interstate have been closed at South Steele Street as police investigate.

The crash is still causing serious delays stretching far into south Denver.
