A man arrested after walking armed into a Denver police substation Monday was wielding an AR-15 assault-style rifle, had a loaded handgun and wore a tactical ballistic vest, court records show.

The man, accompanied by a dog, also had a knife and four additional magazines for the rifle. He also had one spare magazine for the semi-automatic handgun, according to an arrest affidavit.

Daniel Ruiz, 33, is being held on suspicion of felony menacing, reckless endangerment and introduction of contraband. He is being held on $200,000 bond.

In court Tuesday, a prosecutor said Ruiz was angry about not being considered as a potential DPD officer, according to 7News.

According to deputy district attorney George Poland, Ruiz went to the District 4 substation last week to complain that he was not considered. Poland also said Ruiz posted on the District 4 Facebook page early Monday morning: “Just wait til I (expletive) go back there. I can’t wait for you to see what a man can do to another man.”

Ruiz walked into the District 4 substation at about 11:20 a.m. Monday after driving onto the building’s lawn.

“(Ruiz) went up to the clerk and demanded the clerk to open the entrance door to the police substation,” records say. “The suspect was refused entrance to the station and cover was called to the lobby.”

Ruiz then sat down by a table in the lobby and removed his tactical vest and placed the rifle on the table when sirens began sounding.

No one was injured.

The incident prompted evacuations at the District 4 substation and surrounding buildings as the bomb squad inspected Ruiz’s dark blue Toyota 4Runner as a precaution. The vehicle remained outside while a crew inspected it.

Police spokeswoman Raquel Lopez said Ruiz was arrested without incident and his weapon was recovered. The evacuations were lifted after police cleared the man’s vehicle.

Ruiz is being held without bond at the city’s jail. He is due in court on Tuesday morning.
