Interview with Cindy Alix, owner
Q: How did you get involved in this business?
A: We are inspired by our Midwestern roots to bring an authentic Wisconsin-friendly vibe to Golden. The opportunity to repurpose the existing 1940s lodge structure into a retro-modern place for friends was just too good to pass up. The locale caught our attention and inspired us to create this alternative Backyard concept.
Q: What distinguishes you from other businesses in your category?
A: We are your home away from home, the Backyard that you wish you had. No maintenance and all the fun, including refreshing beverages and inspired yet casual cuisine on demand and served by our friendly and outgoing team. Coming soon: our one-of-a-kind, grill-your-own-meal on our custom indoor grill and sand volleyball courts. Drink, laugh, play, grill, dance — that’s our good-natured promise. When was the last time you hung out in the Backyard with friends?
Q: What do you like best about your line of work?
A: Every day we are making new friends and making personal connections within our community. Our mantra is, “A stranger is just a friend we have not met yet.” Anyone who wants to have a good time is welcome at Urban Backyard.
Q: What is your business’ biggest challenge?
A: Our biggest challenge is getting the word out about our community of friends. We are the best-kept secret in Golden right now. We are interested in partnering with organizations, sports clubs, businesses, associations and networks, inviting them to consider Urban Backyard as their home away from home. Our setting offers a casual atmosphere to connect as friends and neighbors … as a community in our Backyard.
Q: Something people might be surprised to learn about you or your business:
A: Our cuisine, though Backyard casual, is inspired by a well-regarded New York chef offering just the right mix of upscale flavor and down-home authenticity. As for Matt and I, we just can’t stop smiling and making people laugh. It must be that good old backyard upbringing where we went outside to play, ran in the sprinkler and ate Popsicles on the back porch. Come see us at Urban Backyard — you’ll be surprised to find out how many friends you just haven’t met yet.
