Broncos defensive end Adam Gotsis has been arrested for allegedly raping a woman in Georgia in 2013 while he was a member of the Georgia Tech football team.

Gotsis, of Lone Tree, surrendered Wednesday at the Fulton County Jail in Atlanta on a charge of strong-arm rape (by physical force), according to a Atlanta police incident report.

He was released after he paid a $50,000 bond, said Tracy Flanagan, spokeswoman for the Fulton County Jail.

Gotsis, who is 6-foot-5 and weighs 295 pounds, is accused of overcoming the will of a 25-year-old woman on March 9, 2013, in Atlanta.

The woman, who is now 30, reported the alleged rape Feb. 1, according to the police report.

“Although the incident in question allegedly occurred more than five years ago, Adam first learned of these shocking accusations last month,” Gotsis’ attorney, Sara Becker of the law firm Arora & LaScala, LLC, said in a statement. “We immediately reached out to law enforcement and have proactively cooperated with all aspects of the investigation while maintaining communication with the team. While we were disappointed to learn of the turn the investigation was taking, we steadfastly maintain that the allegations are false. We will continue to advocate strongly for Adam’s innocence.”

The Broncos issued the following statement to The Denver Post:

“We were recently informed of an investigation into an alleged incident involving Adam Gotsis that occurred in 2013 when he was in college. Our organization was aware of his arrest on March 7, and it is our understanding that no determination has been made at this time as to whether any charges will be filed.

“The Broncos take an accusation of this nature very seriously and will continue to closely monitor the legal proceedings. This issue was promptly reported to the NFL as soon as we learned of it, and we will remain in communication with the league office regarding this matter.”

Georgia Tech later told The Denver Post that it “learned of the arrest today and therefore has no additional information at this time. The report was filed with the Atlanta Police Department on Feb. 1, 2018, and all questions should be directed to APD.”

The Broncos selected Gotsis, who was born in Abbotsford, Australia, and grew up in Melbourne, in the second round of the 2016 NFL draft out of Georgia Tech. While limited early in his rookie NFL season because of injury recovery, Gotsis played in all 16 games in 2017, starting 13 of them. In his two seasons with the Broncos, Gotsis has totaled 55 tackles (33 solo), two sacks, two fumble recoveries and five pass-breakups.
