People staying at a youth hostel in Denver’s North Capitol Hill neighborhood were evacuated from the building Tuesday afternoon because of multiple fire code violations.
The Hotel Task Force, made up of staffers from numerous city agencies, was called to the Denver International Youth Hostel, 630 E. 16th Ave., and task force members found “numerous serious fire code violations,” said Melissa Taylor, a Denver Fire Department spokeswoman.
The task force was referred to the hostel by another city agency, Taylor said.
An investigation determined the building was “unsafe and therefore could not be occupied,” according to the fire department.
The American Red Cross in partnership with the Salvation Army opened a temporary shelter for 48 people displaced by the youth hostel shutdown. Eighty-six people had been staying in the three-story hostel, a privately run business, at East 16th Avenue and Washington Street.
