Bond has been set at $50,000 for a 23-year-old man arrested for investigation of vehicular homicide in the death of Denver Post reporter Colleen O’Connor.

Jesus Carreno, who had previously been held without bond, remains in the Denver city jail, Simon Crittle, jail spokesman, said Friday morning.

No formal charges have been filed against Carreno. District Attorney Mitch Morrissey’s office will determine what charges if any to file.

O’Connor was walking in the crosswalk at South Downing Street around 7:35 p.m. Wednesday at East First Avenue when Carreno drove his car into her. She died of multiple blunt force injuries in the crash, which was ruled an accident by the Denver coroner’s office.

Carreno drove for another eight blocks before pulling over, police said. He then called 911 to report that he was involved in a crash, police said.

Documents released Friday indicate that police arrested Carreno late Wednesday night after smelling a strong odor of an “unknown” alcohol beverage. Carreno’s eyes were bloodshot and watery, according to a probable cause statement.

A field sobriety test was not conducted because Carreno was taken to Denver Health Medical Center for medical treatment, the document says.

At the hospital, Carreno signed a release allowing three blood tests. The results of the blood tests will determine the alcohol content of his blood and whether he had drugs in his system, said Christine Downs, Denver police spokeswoman. The results of the tests are pending.
