An 18-month-old girl wandered away from her grandparent’s Lakewood home into a neighbor’s backyard Tuesday afternoon, fell into a pond and drowned, police say.

“Obviously, it is one of the most tragic set of circumstances that anyone could ever go through and we have people working with a large number of family members,” said Steve Davis, Lakewood police spokesman, on Wednesday morning. “There is no amount of consoling that is going to patch up that kind of hurt.”

It’s unclear how long the girl was in the pond before she was discovered.

“It couldn’t have been very long,” Davis said. “The grandparents had seen her just a short time earlier. But it doesn’t take very long.”

The name of the girl will be released by the Jefferson County coroner.

The incident happened at the grandparent’s home on the 12000 block of West Louisiana Avenue, Davis said.

Police received an emergency call at 1:40 p.m., Davis said. A neighbor had just pulled the child from a small backyard pond and attempted to resuscitate the girl.

The girl was rushed to a hospital where medical personnel also attempted to revive her, but were unsuccessful.

Police are investigating the circumstances that led to the drowning.

The young girl had been in the care of her grandparents when she apparently wandered from their home, Davis said.

Detectives are attempting to establish exactly what occurred and how long she had been in the water, he said.

The Jefferson County District Attorney Office will review the investigation when completed by detectives, to decide whether to file criminal charges, Davis said.
