LOWELL — A 59-year-old Dracut woman with no prior criminal record was sentenced to three years of probation after pleading guilty to stabbing her ex-husband last year in reaction to years of alleged abuse.

Julia Murray was arrested shortly after police found her ex-husband suffering from a stab wound to the torso at 116 Pine Valley Drive in Dracut in September of 2016.

Murray, a hairdresser who cried at her arraignment in Lowell District Court, admitted to the stabbing when she spoke to police and said ‘I probably shouldn’t have done that,” according to police reports.

Murray’s attorney, Jose Serpa, said the incident was a reaction to years of alleged physical, mental and sexual abuse, and even prosecutors said the incident was the result of ongoing “family issues.”

Murray pleaded guilty Tuesday to armed assault with intent to murder and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, according to court records.

Superior Court Judge Robert Ullmann sentenced Murray to three years of probation, according to court records.

Serpa did not immediately return a call seeking comment on the sentence.
