With “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” opening in theaters last Friday, it’s fitting that Breckenridge Brewery’s annual Denver Comic Con beer is being called “I am Brewt.”
The name — a play on the tree-like protagonist Groot’s catchphrase of “I am Groot” — was the winning entry from Rhiana Elizabeth Henry in the sixth annual beer-naming contest that takes place just prior to the start of the convention.
“It’s a pretty fun little project we’ve been doing for years. It’s grown up on its own and taken a life of its own,” Breckenridge brand manager Ryan Workman said.
I am Brewt will be unveiled at the beer-release party on June 6 at Brooklyn’s. In addition, Workman said, there will be a number of locations near the Colorado Convention Center that will serve I am Brewt on tap as the convention approaches.
“The first year … we did six kegs that year,” Breckenridge brand manager Ryan Workman said. “And now it’s turned into a 100-barrel batch of beer, which yields into 180 kegs that we sell throughout the weekend. It’s crazy, it’s just really blown up and turned into a life of its own.”
Part of the annual tradition includes a special pint glass made specifically for the beer. This year’s edition features art from local artist Noah Eisenman, who coincidentally was the winner of the 2016 beer-naming contest with “Snape-ricot.”
As with the previous DCC beers, Breckenridge is using a sessionable recipe that’s meant for a wide variety of palates. This year’s beer is a Bohemian-style pilsner. Denver Comic Con described it as “delicate and well-balanced, light yet complex. Saaz hops, a classic pilsner ingredient, impart a pleasant, earthy aroma while giving spicy flavor characteristics and a crisp, dry finish.”
“We’ve been playing around with trying to do a pilsner anyway, and just playing around with what we thought would be a possible good, easy-drinking, clean beer,” Workman said. “That’s the goal for the comic con beers — something that everyone will like.”
Previous names for the beers include The Fantastic Pour, The Caped Brewsader, Brews Wayne, Hulk’s Mash and Snape-ricot.
For coming up with the winning entry, Henry will receive free beer for a year from Breckenridge and a DCC beer tap handle.
