Sterling police and Logan County Humane Society animal control officers removed more than 80 cats from a home where the door had been left open.

The property was already on local officials’ radar for having too many animals, said Sterling Police Chief Tyson Kerr. Authorities were working with the home owner, who was not living at the 756-square-foot house when officials removed the cats Wednesday. A small number of dead cats were found in the home.

Kerr did not identify the home owner, but said the police department is considering pursuing felony animal cruelty charges.

Because the Logan County Humane Society only has space for 36 cats, the 83 cats and kittens seized were taken Thursday to the Denver Dumb Friends League. The animals will be held there until the legal situation is resolved.
