Police investigators still are trying to identify a man who was shot Friday by a Douglas County sheriff’s deputy after he aimed an assault rifle at the deputy.

The man, who remains hospitalized, faces charges of first-degree assault of a peace officer once he is released from the hospital, said Littleton Police Department Cmdr. Trent Cooper.

The deputy had stopped about 6:45 p.m. Friday on County Line Road just east of Santa Fe Drive in an area of Littleton that is in Douglas County, Cooper said. The motorist allegedly got out of a car with an assault rifle and pointed it at the deputy, Cooper said.

“It just goes to show how unpredictable these kinds of situations can be,” Cooper said. “The deputy thought he was making a courtesy stop to help a disabled motorist in need and the next thing he knows he’s confronted with a weapon.”

The shooting remains under investigation by the Littleton Police Department and the 18th Judicial District’s critical incident response team, which investigates police shootings.

The deputy has been placed on administrative leave, pending the investigation, said Lauren Lekander, a Douglas County sheriff’s spokeswoman.
