A convicted felon and robbery fugitive who was prohibited from having any weapons was arrested late Tuesday night in Colorado Springs carrying five guns including an AR-15 assault rifle, ammunition and body armor.

Shawn Eltringham, who was also wanted on assault warrants, was arrested at 11:02 p.m. after undercover officers saw him wearing body armor at the Rodeway Inn, 520 N. Murray Blvd., according to a Colorado Springs police report.

Colorado Springs vice, narcotics and intelligence officers were conducting surveillance at the motel when they spotted Eltringham loading a rifle case into his parked vehicle. They could see several assault-rifle magazines stuffed into his body armor vest, the report says.

When Eltringham drove away from the motel, a K-9 unit from the Sand Creek Patrol pulled him over on a traffic stop near Interstate 25 and South Circle Drive and discovered a trove of heavy weaponry, the report says.

In all, police discovered five weapons. Eltringham was carrying a pistol and officers found three rifles and a hand gun in his vehicle, the police report says.

While he was being taken to the El Paso County jail he kicked out the side-door window of the squad car, the report says.
