The Arapahoe County Coroner’s Office has identified a 53-year-old man who was shot when he allegedly broke into the Littleton home of a Denver police officer.
Kerry Dean Hughes died of a gunshot wound to the chest after he was shot during a home invasion Friday, according to Dr. Kelly Lear, Arapahoe County coroner.
The cause of the shooting has been classified as a homicide, which means that he died at the hands of someone else.
The name of the Denver police officer who fatally shot Hughes is Phillip Donovan, said Sgt. Rob Eich, Littleton police spokesman.
The investigation of the shooting is ongoing, Eich said Monday.
Littleton police responded to the officer’s home in the 6200 block of South Spotswood Street at 4:35 p.m., according to 7News.
The officer told Littleton police he had been sleeping in the basement when he heard someone break into his house. The officer said he shot the suspect from the base of the stairs.
