Contrary to popular consciousness, the food strip that is South Broadway does not end at Alameda Avenue. The good eats extend much farther south than that.

For example: Colore Pizzeria Moderna on South Broadway and Yale — 20-odd blocks beyond the Deluxe-Sketch-Beatrice cluster. A cleanly conceived, cleanly designed joint serving decent pies, good salads and tasty sandwiches made from fresh ingredients, the place fills a glaring need in the Harvard Gulch neighborhood. It’s a relaxing, easy, family-friendly, weeknight-supper place that also serves Moretti beer on draft.

The pizzas at Colore are a step above acceptable. Crusts are flavorful, usually sturdy enough to handle their toppings and served hot. (Though Colore does deliver, the pizzas are best consumed on-site; they degrade over time.)

Salads, likewise, are better than most. If the kitchen tends to overdress them, they do so with good intentions and good house-made dressings; choose the spinach, bacon and egg salad for the most substantial supper. Choose focaccia if you’re having a sandwich because the bread, dusted with dried herbs, is as pleasant as the fillings. If tonight’s a vegetarian night, choose the roasted veggie sandwich.

Best of all: Moretti on tap. If it’s not the most unbelievably gorgeous beer on the planet, it’s refreshing and evocative of breezy afternoons in Positano, which is not a bad thing to daydream about while sitting on Colore’s patio.
