Neil Argo, an award-wining music composer in television and film who earned a master’s degree at the University of Northern Colorado, died Thursday in Scottsdale, Ariz. He was 71.

A recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts Award, Argo is also was honored as a distinguished alumni of UNC, according to an SMC Artists news release.

“Neil had the ability to cut to the core of a scene in a surprising and touching way,” said Marty Stouffer, “Wild America” producer and a friend of Argo. “He could express universal emotions that we really hadn’t picked up on as yet.”

Argo’s scores include “Beverly Hills 90210,” “Melrose Place” and National Geographic documentaries. He was recognized for work on Emmy Award-winning productions of “Wild America.” Argo received 15 Telly Awards for his work in advertising.

He died at the Mayo clinic of heart failure, said his wife, Zenna.

At the time of his death, Argo was working on television drama and a jazz album.
