A bus carrying a New Mexico church group crashed off a bridge embankment, leaving two people dead, including the 22-year-old driver, and injuring several more along southbound Interstate 25 between Colorado Springs and Pueblo on Sunday afternoon.

Colorado State Patrol investigators believe the man driving the bus, who was ejected in the crash, may have suffered a seizure, agency spokesman Ivan Alvarado said. “That’s from the witness statements. We’re not confirming it until the coroner confirms it.”

The chartered bus was carrying 10 children and five adults to Albuquerque.

It veered off the right side of I-25 around 2:30 p.m. north of Pueblo, hit part of a bridge and then hurtled down off the highway.

“It hit the bridge, then went off the west side of the interstate. … It went down an embankment and into a ditch,” Alvarado said.

Traffic was delayed after the crash and investigators indicated a closure was possible to enable removal of the bus and further investigation. Three helicopters and multiple ambulances went to the scene and 13 children and adults were taken to hospitals.

Their conditions were uncertain, Alvarado said.

No other vehicles were involved in the crash, he said.

Names and other details weren’t available, he said, and it wasn’t clear whether the other person killed was an adult or a child.
