LOWELL — The VFW Highway’s inbound lane was closed off between University Avenue and Aiken Street for roughly four hours due to a sinkhole Saturday.

Police officers were dispatched to the scene at 12:30 p.m.

Massachusetts Department of Transportation spokesperson Jacquelyn Goddard stated in an email around 4:50 p.m. the pothole had been plated over and the roadway reopened.

Further repair work will be performed on Monday and Tuesday, weather permitting, she stated.

The pothole, measuring two-by-three feet in size, was discovered on the deck of the VFW Highway Bridge over the Beaver Brook, which is a bridge currently being replaced, according to Goddard.

The hole extended into the rebar area.

No injuries were reported.
