LOWELL — Police are investigating yet another incident involving gunshots fired in a city neighborhood — this time in The Acre neighborhood on Saturday night.

No injuries were reported when police were called to check out possible gunshots in the area of 28 Varney St. shortly after 11 p.m., according to Lowell police Capt. Paul Laferriere. Further investigation of the scene determined a vehicle parked in the driveway had been struck by gunfire.

There are no suspects at this time, but the investigation remains ongoing, Laferriere said.

Troy Hebert, who lives next door to the Varney Street home, had been camping the night of the shooting. He said he learned about the incident after asking neighbors about the police tape he found discarded in his garbage can.

“I’ve been here for 27 years and we’ve never had a problem,” Hebert said on Tuesday.

He expressed concern about gunshots in his area, reflecting on the pool in his backyard and the family members who regularly visit.

“I just don’t want guns being shot off next to my house again,” Hebert said.

This was one of two gunshot calls police responded to last weekend — both within an hour of each other — and the third such call since July 8.

At around midnight Sunday, police discovered several casings in front of 57 Calvin St., in South Lowell. Further investigation led to the discovery of bullet holes in a home’s siding.

A light colored sedan is believed to have been seen leaving the area, Laferriere said.

On July 8, police recovered a dozen shell casings near the corner of Stromquist Avenue and Corbett Street, also in South Lowell.

A witness claimed to have seen an older-model Jeep Cherokee speed away from the area after hearing the gunshots.

It is not known if any of these incidents are related.
