The sun sets over the Sangre de Cristo Mountains west of Westcliffe and Silver Cliff, Colorado, on June 6, 2019. The Dark Skies of Wet Mountain Valley organization built the Smokey Jack Observatory, a 12-foot by 12-foot building with a retractable roof observatory, located in Bluff Park in Westcliffe.

I also spent several nights in the small Colorado mountain towns of Westcliffe and Silver Cliff. The International Dark-Sky Association awarded both communities a special recognition. The Dark Skies of Wet Mountain Valley organization is dedicated to reducing light pollution and promoting stargazing.

Telling those two stories were some of my most memorable Colorado experiences.
