Cañon City’s beloved white deer officially has a name.

Mayor Preston Troutman on Monday read a proclamation designating the deer’s new name, Tilde, which also is the character placed over the “ñ” in Cañon City. He said the tilde is as unique to the city as the deer.

“The City of Cañon City recognizes that our community has invested time and effort in giving the white deer a name as unique as its color,” Troutman said.

The deer first was spotted in town in August 2018, attracting lots of onlookers trying to catch a glimpse of him eating in a meadow, frolicking with his siblings or resting beneath a tree.
