Storm could bring thundersnow to Denver, up to 8 inches of snow in mountains

Dense fog, rain, strong winds, thunder and snow are all possible Monday

Rain began turning into snow in areas of the foothills about 4 p.m., and the wet weather worked its way into parts of the Denver area an hour or two later.

Patches of dense fog, rain, strong winds, thunder and snow hit parts of Colorado on Monday making for a tumultuous weather day for residents and travelers.

About 9:45 p.m. Monday, the National Weather Service in Boulder reported 9 inches of new snow on Floyd Hill and 7 inches of snow in the Pinecliff area. Snow was falling in Denver on Monday night, with bands of heavy, wind-blown snow west and south of the city. Roads in Denver remained wet about 10 p.m.

Areas of fog burned off about 9 a.m. Forecasters called for chances of a thunderstorm and possible thundersnow, after 4 p.m., according to the weather service. Winds gusts up to 20 mph were expected.

The high temperature in Denver on Monday topped out at 55 degrees at 2:13 p.m., according to the weather service. By 7 p.m. the temperature in the city dipped to 38 degrees. The overnight low in the city was expected to be 20.

 

A light rain-snow mix began falling in parts of the Denver area about 5 p.m., and the precipitation was expected to pick up and change to snow as day turned into night. The sunset in Denver on Monday was at 7:18 p.m.

Sidewalks and streets in Denver were wet at 7:15 p.m. Between 1 to 3 inches of snow accumulation is possible in the city by Tuesday morning, the weather service said.

The mountains are expected to get 2 to 6 inches of snow by Tuesday morning. Some areas could get as much as 8 inches of snow.

Expect partly sunny skies Tuesday with a high near 49 degrees. Temperatures will dip below freezing Tuesday night.

Another storm system is expected to move through the Denver area on Wednesday afternoon. The system is again expected to bring rain that could turn to snow between 9 p.m. Wednesday and 3 a.m. Thursday, the weather service says. Wednesday’s high temperature is expected to be around 54 degrees.

Snow showers also are expected before noon Thursday. The snow will then turn to rain. The chance for precipitation is 40 percent.

It will be mostly sunny on Friday. The high temperature will reach 61 degrees.

There’s a slight chance for rain and snow Saturday night and Sunday, the weather service says.
