I tend to think of photojournalism as the heart and soul of a newspaper. There’s nothing quite like photography that can put readers face to face with the people at the center of a story. We strive to photograph groups and individuals who are living out the most important issues in our communities. By visually sharing the lived experience of those we photograph with our readers, we can connect people across space and time. Hopefully, that effort imparts understanding and empathy.

Denver Post photojournalists record a full spectrum of humanity in any given year, meeting people on their best days, their worst days and everywhere in between. Hyoung Chang captured the timeless beauty and glamour of a woman celebrating her 110th birthday in the striking photograph on the cover of this year in photos collection. Less than three weeks after we marked the 20th anniversary of the 1999 Columbine High School massacre, students, educators and families were terrorized at STEM School Highlands Ranch. Hyoung Chang, Helen Richardson and Multimedia Editor Eric Lutzens were there to bear witness.

As Denver voters contemplated ending the city’s controversial “camping ban” policy, Joe Amon spent time with individuals living their lives on the street. Around the same time this spring, the Nuggets and Avalanche kept winning games and both made long playoff runs. AAron Ontiveroz and Andy Cross followed the teams across the country. RJ Sangosti documented two families confronting chronic asthma issues living in the middle of one of the largest construction projects in Colorado history.

I could go on and on, but from here on out its time for the photographers, and more importantly their photographs, tell the story.
